text introducing cord ties

Hi I'm Kensa

I am 14 years old. I started this business 5 years ago, at the age of 9. My younger brother sparked the inspiration for this as I wanted to do something special for him and my mum. I made a cord tie with the colours my mum loved, and made matching bracelets for my immediate family as well as my grandma and great-grandad. All of which surrounded my mum at the homebirth of my brother. Seeing the Midwife tie the cord tie around his umbilical cord and then looking around to see everyone with their around there wrists, motivated me to give that oppurtinity to other families.

"I believe if I share my cord ties with you, it will help show the connection between your family"

I have recently moved states to the Whitsundays, and this new beginning encouraged me to completely re-design my website and branding. I have kept 1 of my original designs along with my cultural designs. But I have decided to bring out 3 new ranges; ‘Australian Flora and Fauna, “Crystals’ and ‘Surrounding Environment. I spent lots of time perfecting these designs as well as my new branding, till it was just right. I want to make the ability to connect with your family as welcoming and enjoyable as possible, as that is my overall goal with my business.

Why Choose an umbilical cord tie?

Why would you want to put an uncomfortable plastic clip on your precious newborn baby?

Your baby is not a bag of frozen peas!

Plastic cord clips are bulky and inconvenient for both the mother and the baby, and it disturbs treasured skin-to-skin moments with Mum or partner and baby. Plastic cord slips will also get caught in nappies and clothes. Cord ties offer a comfortable alternative that is gentle on the baby’s skin. My cord ties specifically are thin and soft with nothing that can irritate the baby’s skin or interrupt key bonding experiences between the family. Umbilical cord ties have been used for thousands of years and are still in common use throughout the world today.

FAQ

I make the orders myself, after school or during the weekends. Though I always try my best to get them out as soon as I receive your order. Despite that, please allow 2 weeks to receive your cord tie, (allow a little more time during December and the beginning of January).  I also recommend you place your order no later than 36 weeks (30 weeks for multiple babies) just in case your baby makes an early appearance.

There is no research to suggest that cord ties need to be sterilised, however just as you will probably want to wash any new clothes you get for your baby before she or he wears them, you may want to wash the cord tie in the same way and allow it to dry.

You may see instructions on the internet suggesting sterilisation by pouring boiling water over the cord tie and let it soak for a few minutes, then put it in a zip lock bag, and keep it in the freezer until you need it.  However it’s worth noting that unless the bag and any other items that come in contact with the cord tie are sterile, then sterilisation cannot be acheived.

Tying the cord tie is really easy, you just need to make sure it’s tied very tight.

Instructions come with the cord tie which will assist your birth partner, midwife or doula in tying the tie.

There is no need for a spare cord tie, however, if you would like to order an identical cord tie as a keepsake rather than washing the one you will be using, then please feel free to order an additional cord tie

Sometimes umbilical cords can leak a bit, but this will normally happen in the first few hours after birth and is more common when the cord is cut immediately after birth because there is still blood inside the cord.

Delayed cord clamping, which means waiting until most of your baby’s blood from the placenta has transferred back into your baby, has many health benefits for your baby and reduces the likelihood of blood leaking from the cord.

The job of the umbilical cord is to transfer blood, oxygen and nutrients to your baby while it’s inside your womb, it’s literally your baby’s lifeline.  Once the cord has been cut it’s job is complete so over a period of typically 3-7 days the cord will dry up, shrivel and eventually fall off.

Sometimes the umbilical cord can get a bit smelly, this is normal and nothing to do with using a cord tie, it happens with the plastic clips too.  You can just bathe it with some warm water to help reduce the smell.

Some mums have kept the dried up piece of umbilical cord still attached to the cord tie as a keepsake.  If you don’t want to keep the piece of cord and would like to keep the cord tie, using a pair of sharp scissors, careful snip the cord close to the knot of the cord tie and pull the cord out from the other side.  You can then wash the cord tie, let it dry and then wrap it around the keepsake card and pop it back in the envelope that comes with the cord tie.  The keepsake card has a space for you to write your baby’s name and date of birth.

Some mums like to tie the cord tie to the mums bracelet as a sign of their bond and wrap both around the keepsake card.

Some mums like to continue to wear their bracelet for longer, whichever you would like.
