At mumabuba’s Baby First Foods class, we go deeper than the “what and when” of solids. You’ll gain a clearer understanding of why your baby eats the way they do, how to support their developing gut and nervous system, and how to create a positive food environment that helps your baby feel safe, curious, and connected.
Your baby’s first experiences with food don’t just fill their tummy – they shape their relationship with eating for life. The way we introduce solids can influence how children relate to food emotionally and physiologically for years to come.
When babies are supported to explore food with curiosity, safety, and joy, they’re more likely to grow into children who:
Trust their body’s hunger and fullness cues
Feel confident trying new tastes and textures
Have a more adventurous and balanced palate
Experience less mealtime stress and power struggles
Maintain a healthier gut, immune system, and mood regulation
But when solids are introduced too early, too fast, or without respect for a baby’s pace, it can lead to struggles with picky eating, food refusal, digestive discomfort, and even emotional disconnection from food and mealtimes.
Getting it right from the beginning isn’t about pressure or perfection. It’s about tuning into your baby’s cues, offering the right support, and laying the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating – not just physically, but emotionally too.
✔ We focus on your baby’s emotional experience of food – how early feeding shapes long-term attitudes, preferences, and self-regulation
✔ We explore your baby’s developing microbiome and how to nourish their gut health through prebiotics, probiotics, and whole, organic first foods
✔ We build your confidence so you can enjoy this milestone without second-guessing yourself at every spoonful
The psychology of food for babies – How early experiences influence eating behaviour, sensory development, and emotional resilience
Gut health matters – Your baby’s microbiome is key to immunity, digestion, and long-term wellbeing. Learn how to support it from the very first bite
Baby-led weaning vs. spoon-feeding – Why letting babies take the lead can nurture independence, trust, and body awareness
When and why to start solids – What the 4-6 month window means for your baby’s development, and why around 6 months is often best
The best first foods – Nutrient-rich, gut-friendly, and baby-appropriate options (and why organic can make a difference)
Gag reflex & tongue thrust – What’s normal, what’s not, and how to stay calm through the mess
Iron & brain development – How to meet iron needs without compromising digestive comfort
Allergies vs. intolerances – How to introduce new foods safely and spot signs of sensitivity
Feeding rhythm & milk balance – How often to offer solids and how to read your baby’s cues
Safe food preparation – Cutting, mashing, and presenting foods to match developmental stages
What equipment you really need – Skip the gadgets and get clear on the essentials
Navigating feeding challenges – From food refusal to messy mealtimes, we’ll help you stay patient, curious, and connected
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all talk. It’s a gentle, expert-led space to explore feeding through a developmental and emotional lens. Perfect for parents of babies nearing 4-6 months, the class is designed to help you feel empowered and informed as you approach this meaningful milestone.
Led by Jo, founder of mumabuba – an IBCLC lactation consultant, childbirth educator, and pre & perinatal somatic psychology practitioner with over 20 years’ experience (and a mum of three!) – you’ll receive individualised guidance in a warm, welcoming environment.
I love the baby led approach because it means my babies would eat whatever we ate at meal time with us every night. By the age of one my kids were all independently feeding themselves with a bowl and fork/spoon and not making any mess by then, because for the past six months their hand eye development was being worked on in the beginning. This meant that when we went out to dinner and anywhere else, I didn’t need to bring anything as my kids have always ate whatever we ate 🙂 The baby led approach actually makes life easier especially. Once you have multiple children it also means my children learnt from a young age that food needs to be chewed and this helps prevent the risk of them putting things in their mouths and just swallowing.
