Starting solids is about more than food

Your baby’s relationship with food begins long before they eat a full meal.

The first tastes, textures, and mealtime experiences help shape not only eating habits, but also trust, body awareness, confidence, and connection.

At mumabuba’s Baby First Foods class, we go deeper than introducing solids.

This small-group class explores how babies experience food emotionally, physiologically, and developmentally – helping you understand not just what to offer, but how to support your baby through this important transition.

Together we explore the foundations of responsive feeding, your baby’s developing digestive system and microbiome, practical first food guidance, and ways to create calm and connected mealtimes.

Whether you are feeling excited, nervous, overwhelmed by conflicting advice, or simply wanting to feel prepared before solids begin, this class is designed to help you approach this milestone with confidence.

Why these first experiences matter

Your baby’s first relationship with food can influence far more than nutrition

When babies are supported with safety, responsiveness, and curiosity, mealtimes may become opportunities to build:

  • trust in hunger and fullness cues
  • confidence exploring new tastes and textures
  • positive sensory experiences
  • enjoyment and connection around eating
  • healthy foundations for digestion and gut development

At the same time, understanding your baby’s developmental readiness can help reduce pressure, confusion, and unnecessary stress for parents.

This class helps you understand what is normal, what deserves attention, and how to support your baby without feeling like you need to do everything perfectly.

What we'll explore together

  • Understanding when your baby is ready

Learn how babies typically transition toward solids, what developmental readiness looks like, and why timing is about more than age alone.

  • Your baby’s developing gut and microbiome

Explore how early food experiences support digestion, immune development, and overall wellbeing – and practical ways to nourish your baby’s developing system.

  • The psychology of first foods

Understand how babies experience new tastes, textures, and feeding interactions, and how early experiences can influence confidence, self-regulation, and attitudes toward food.

  • Creating positive mealtime experiences

Learn ways to support emotional safety, reduce pressure, and build connection and enjoyment around eating.

  • Baby-led weaning, spoon-feeding and finding your approach

Explore different feeding approaches and understand how to choose what feels supportive for your baby and your family.

  • First foods and practical preparation

Discuss nourishing first foods, iron needs, introducing allergens, food presentation, and simple preparation ideas without overwhelm.

  • Feeding cues, rhythm and common concerns

Learn how to recognise your baby’s cues, understand normal responses to solids, and navigate gagging, food refusal, and changing feeding patterns with greater confidence.

Why this class is different

Many classes focus on milestones and checklists.

This class takes a wider view.

Rather than simply telling you what foods to start with, we explore your baby’s experience of feeding and help you understand the “why” behind recommendations.

You’ll leave with practical knowledge, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of how these early food experiences fit into your baby’s emotional, digestive, and developmental wellbeing.

Following the class, you’ll receive supportive handouts so you can revisit key concepts and feel guided once solids begin at home.

Small class sizes (maximum 6 participants) also mean there is space to ask questions and feel supported.

Who is this class for?

This class is ideal for parents:

  • with babies approaching solids (typically around 4–6 months)
  • wanting to feel prepared before food begins
  • interested in responsive feeding and baby-led approaches
  • wanting a deeper understanding of gut health and early food experiences
  • anyone feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice around starting solids

Who facilitates the class?

Baby First Foods is facilitated by Jo, founder of mumabuba.

Jo has supported women, babies and families through fertility, pregnancy, birth, feeding and the postnatal period for more than 22 years.

As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), childbirth educator, and practitioner trained in pre and perinatal somatic approaches, Jo brings an integrated perspective that combines developmental understanding, infant feeding knowledge, body awareness, and practical family support.

Her approach is not about rigid rules or perfect feeding – it is about helping families understand babies more deeply so they can feel informed, connected, and confident.
