Many years ago women would have been surrounded by other women in their village or community, providing a support network and teaching environment for new mums learning new skills, such as breastfeeding. In our modern society, mums can be very isolated, and do not always have the support and information they need when it comes to breastfeeding.
There are a number of reasons why breastfeeding can be a challenge for both the mum and the baby, and the type of birth experience you both had can also have a direct impact on breastfeeding. For many women, positioning and attachment can be problematic, which in turn can lead to muscular tension, poor posture, breast pain and sore or cracked/bleeding nipples.
Women often have concerns about milk supply and feeding frequency, research shows that complementary therapies can have a direct impact on milk supply and breastfeeding duration.
Babies who have difficulty feeding can lose weight, become anxious, restless and frustrated, this is both concerning and exhausting for the mother, especially when they are already dealing with the sudden change in routine, lack of sleep and recovering from the birth.

Suppression of lactation
As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with more than 17 years experience in supporting women to breastfeed, I’m here to help you.
My approach to providing lactation support is unique.
I combine my deep knowledge and experience in lactation science with a use of paediatric bodywork and pre and perinatal somatic sciences. This means I can assess and advise on lactation issues holistically to really understand why you are having problems.
There are many things that can impact on breastfeeding from both the mother and the baby’s perspective, these can be biological, physical or psychological and can be a result of a difficult or traumatic birth or underlying health concerns, and can also be traced back to the mother’s own birth imprints from when she was a baby.
My extensive experience in supporting hundreds of women and babies to successfully breastfeed has allowed me to develop a method of assessing breastfeeding and supporting both the mother and her baby in a compassionate and nurturing way that gets to the real cause, or causes, of the problem.
All of this means I can provide you with a model of support that you won’t find anywhere else.

The most amazing gift Jo gave me was the ability to breast feed my son without pain. She taught me new holding positions for him which helped his latching, and like magic - he ate without any trouble and my nipples healed within 2 days. He's 1 year old now and still breastfed. Thank you Jo!"

After successfully breastfeeding my first born, I automatically assumed it would be just as simple with my second. However I was wrong, and after two weeks I was still really struggling. I decided to seek help from a professional IBCLC in Jo, and she just happened to live right round the corner! Jo spent a lot of time with my daughter and I to figure out where the issue was and kept in close contact until we were 100% on the right track. For anyone who is struggling on their breastfeeding journey, please don’t hesitate to get some help from Jo! It will take a load off your shoulders and you will be feeding confidently and happily in no time.
Emma
I cannot believe it now a year since Therese experienced all the difficulties with feeding little Emma. You will be pleased to know that Emma is still fully breastfed. She celebrated her 1st birthday on 16 December. Therese is back at part time work but expresses at work and Emma loves Mum’s milk. I thought I would send off an email to say thanks once again for your assistance with Therese and little Emma.

I was so relieved to finally find somebody who understood why my breasts were so sore after 10 months of an ongoing painful breastfeeding journey that nobody else in the medical world could fathom! Jo was not only very knowledgeable about breastfeeding but also passionate about it and was very well read and up to date on the the latest research. She gave me a treatment which provided me with huge relief. I only wish I lived closer as I would be over there every week

Over the last 2 years my daughter and I have had a wonderful breastfeeding relationship, thanks to your support and observation of a tongue tie in those early days. I couldn't believe how much of an immediate difference the procedure made! Despite my fierce determination to breastfeed, I have no doubt I would have found it impossible to continue had you not been there to identify and help correct what was happening.

I have been reflecting on my journey a lot lately, as my goal was always to breastfeed Isabelle to two years of age and we've made it! I've nursed her through a twin pregnancy, and for the last 6 months, have fed her and her EBF brothers. It's been a magical experience for me, watching the three bond over some boobie! I can't thank you enough for helping us achieve that. Because of my success feeding Isabelle, I went into my journey with the boys, with eyes wide open but full of confidence (despite many medical professionals telling me I wouldn't be able to feed 2, let alone 3). All three are absolutely thriving and I think I will be feeding them all for a long time yet.

Unfortunately breast feeding can be tough for some and is taught to us by people who don’t have all the info. Jo has all the information and is constantly updating her training. We really valued her evidence based approach, body work and her interesting views on somatic effects on bub. I can honestly say I wouldn’t still be nourishing my baby with breast milk if I hadn’t met Jo. I always left appointments with Jo feeling supported and more confident. I’m so thankful and excited to recommend her to others.
Emily
Jo was an incredible support throughout my breastfeeding and pregnancy journeys with my last two babies. I'm so grateful for the help and support she provided and truly believe that without her compassionate, knowledgeable support I would have struggled so much to more to breastfeed them. Thank you, Jo
Aimee
Jo has been a presence through my last two breastfeeding journeys, offering her ear and gently guiding me in the right direction while I untangled a web of ties and intolerances. She is an inspiration, a wealth of information, and a wonder among women.
