Babies are very aware of their environment from a very young age, and what they experience in-utero and during birth create imprints that shape the way that they will see and interact with the world around them. This is natures way of preparing our babies for the environment that they will be born into.
Our modern way of life, and the modern approach to birthing, create experiences that are not always aligned with what your baby would naturally be expecting. Although it’s unlikely that you are having to deal with wolves at your door, it is likely that you are having to deal with the stresses of everyday life, and you may have experienced birthing interventions that from your baby’s point of view, were unpleasant, or even traumatic and painful.
Sleeplessness/Restlessness
Birth recovery
Excessive crying
Reflux
Colic
Teething
Tension within the body
Difficulties feeding
Constipation
Bonding & attachment
During your baby’s time in-utero she/he will have been receiving information and experiencing sensations chemically through your hormones and physically through pressure, movement and sound. These experiences create what are called implicit memories, or birth imprints, and they can have a profound impact on your baby and on the way that your baby’s nervous system develops. In an ideal situation your baby would be exposed to a range of experiences, but with the majority of their time in-utero they would feel safe, unthreatened, calm and loved. All too often though, the stresses of modern life can result in your baby being exposed to high and prolonged levels of stress hormones which can influence the way that her/his nervous system develops, based on what she/he believes to be ‘normal’. This can mean that babies can be constantly in a state of fight or flight, finding it difficult to settle, feeling anxious and insecure, or they might frequently be in a state of shutdown, making them withdrawn, unusually quiet or appearing to not focus on things for any length of time.
Something that is often overlooked is that your baby’s experience of the birth is not necessarily the same as yours. Even if you had a natural, calm, vaginal birth with no pain relief, what your baby experienced may be very different. Similarly, you may have found the birth to be traumatic, but your baby may have navigated it with relative ease. That’s why it is so important to consider the birth from both the mother and the baby’s perspectives.
It’s not something that we like to think about, but human babies have to navigate a very difficult birth process. The physical pressures that babies experience during contractions are huge, as the baby navigates through the pelvis their head and face will be coming into contact with very hard, thick bones with almost no soft tissue to protect them. Interventions such as forceps or suction add another layer of physical experiences that are alien to the baby and can result in significant discomfort, pain, bruising and damage to bones and cartilage. Caesarean sections result in a completely different experience for the baby and what would normally be a transition over several hours happens in a few short minutes and create a whole different type of birth imprint.
These in-utero and birth experiences can have profound affects on your baby, leading to challenges with their nervous system, physical discomfort or pain, and emotional insecurities. If your baby is frequently unsettled, agitated, crying excessively, has difficulties feeding and sleeping, these are good indicators that your baby needs help in overcoming issues from her/his birth.
Although your baby cannot speak or make cognitive sense of what she or he is experiencing, she/he is very capable of communicating with us, if we know how to listen. The way that they cry, their body language, how they prefer to lay, how they frequently touch or pull on parts of their body, are all cues that your baby is trying to tell you something, and responding to those cues can have a wonderfully powerful healing effect, providing much needed relief to your baby and to you, and can significantly improve the bonding and attachment between you and your baby.
Babies are very receptive to nurturing and therapeutic care. By reviewing their birth experience and understanding the cues they provide through their behaviour, body language and the way they cry, I can assess what kind of support your baby needs.
I can help relieve physical discomfort caused by your baby’s birth journey through the use of delicate bodywork, craniosacral therapy and baby-touch therapy. I can also help with many common issues such as constipation, reflux and colic and I can use these same techniques to help with sleeplessness, restlessness and the underlying cause of excessive crying.
I can also provide you with advice and teach you some simple techniques that you can use on your baby at home, which will be beneficial for your baby and also help with bonding and attachment.
If your baby is having difficulties with feeding, this may be as a result of her/his birth experience, or there may be other complications. As an International Board Certified Lactation consultant with more than 17 years experience in supporting women to breastfeed, I can help you – you can find out more about my unique approach to lactation support here.

I was recommended to see Jo for my baby girl as she was finding it difficult to turn her head and I had been told she had torticollis. We had a difficult birth, my daughter came out the wrong way and had the cord wrapped round her neck several times. Jo was so good with both myself and my daughter, she explained to me what she was going to do, and then spoke to my daughter explaining everything she was going to do and interacting with her whilst giving her a treatment. My little girl was so relaxed after the treatment, it was lovely to see the way she interacted with Jo and she had so much more movement in her neck. We saw Jo for a couple more treatments and my daughter gained full range of motion in her neck. She was so much more settled and content. Not only was Jo able to help with her neck but she was able to calm her by settling her nervous system and give me techniques to use on her at home to enhance our connection which was a bonus I was not expecting. I am grateful for Jo’s calm, considerate and gentle approach to working with my baby girl.
